To get started, try this. Rank IB subjects in order from most to least difficult. Do this individually, then compare your list with someone else. How did you make your decisions? Could there be a scientific experiment you might construct to settle this thorny issue once and for all? Do your conclusions suggest anything about the way we, or you, value different areas of skill or knowledge?

BUT IS IT ART?

What do you think of this painting? Do you like it? Is it art? Does it have a 'meaning'? How do we decide?

What do you think of this painting? Do you like it? Is it art? Does it have a 'meaning'? How do we decide?

We're going to try to come up with some rules or parameters to help us decide what art is, or what counts as art. You'll be assigned one of the following pieces' be prepared to tell your classmates what it is and whether it deserves to be valued as art. You should have an opinion and be ready to defend your opinion.

1. Maradona

5. D-Day Landings. (Spielberg version here.)

4. You Suffer (live version here)

TASK: With a classmate, come up with a definition of what 'art' is. What standard does an artifact need to meet to be considered art? What is the 'scope' of art? That is, what is it for? Can you start filling in your knowledge framework?
